Government Incentive available for Solar Power

Under the government’s Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme, eligible small-scale renewable energy systems are entitled to receive small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Under the scheme, the amount of STCs are calculated on the systems geographical location, installation date, and the amount of electricity in megawatt hours (MWh) generated over the deeming period.

The STCs created from your system installation act as a form of currency. This currency is applied to your initial quotation, significantly reducing your investment cost to have your system installed.

Currently for a 6.6kw system, the STC value is approximately $4000. That’s an initial saving of $4000 on your investment just by making the decision to install a solar system to your home.

It’s important to note that the deeming period for the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme decreases each year until 2030, meaning the amount of eligible STCs will also decrease. This will therefore reduce the initial rebate/savings on all systems.

In 2018, the deeming period is 13 years.

Retailer Feed In Tariff

Feed-in tariffs are an incentive where the energy retailer pays you for the excess power that your system generates and feeds back into the grid. Synergy provides customers with a feed-in tariff at a rate of 7.135cents for every kWh (or unit) fed back into the grid.

How to calculate your savings

A 5kw system produces 22kWh/units a day on average. If the home uses 12 units of generated power, then the excess 10kWh/units are exported into the grid at 7.135c per kWh/unit.

  • 12 units at the current Synergy price of 25.752c equals to $3.09 per day.
  • You save $191.59 over the billing period of 62 days.
  • You save $1127.85 over 12 months.
  • You save $4511.40 over a 4-year period.

Feed-in tariff savings based on exporting 10 units a day:

  • Your Synergy account is credited with 71.35 cents per day (10 units x 7.135c).
  • You are credited $44.10 over the billing period of 62 days.
  • You save $260.40 over a year.
  • You save $1041.60 over a 4-year period.

Based on the example, a 5kw system could potentially save you $5553 over a 4-year period.

These figures are based on the potential average power generated over a 12-month period. Figures will vary depending on power generation and consumption. This example does not consider any power usage from the grid at night. This is an example only to explain how potential savings are calculated on generated power.
